OPEN WEEK

Kellys Eurospar singles stroke

Members are asked to take note of the following club rule

Rule 19 b) A member whose subscription is unpaid by 1st May shall not be eligible to compete in any club competition.

The AIB Moville sponsored Sunday’s very well supported open singles stableford. The best card of the day was that of Damien Harkin (12) with 42 points. A great finish included two birdies at the last two par threes proved to be the difference, particularly the two at the final hole. This gave him what proved to be the vital point between first and second place. Patsy Harvey was the man who chased him all the way with a marvellous score of 41 points. The nineteen handicapper had seven pars on his way to a top finish. Next best was Joe Doherty (12) with 40 points. The basis of Joe’s game was the way he played the six par threes, dropping only one shot to par. The gross prize is becoming a very keenly contested at Greencastle and this time it was the turn of Paul Wallace to collect the honour with a four over par round.  The nines went to Barney Boyle and Paul Foley with 22 and 23 points respectively.

This weekend sees the local Moville Community College running their fund raising classic at the club. A timesheet is in operation and places can be reserved by contacting the club.

Sundays competition is the Port A Carraig Cup, a singles stableford competition and the next in the Player of the Year events. Currently Liam Edwards leads the table.

The following weekend the club’s Open Week starts with nine consecutive days of competition. Timesheets are in operation each day, and places can be reserved for each event by contacting the club on 0749381013.

Last weeks ladies competition was the Mary Bonner Memorial Cup. The winner was Maureen Keys (20) with 35 points. But she only won on countback after the break of tie from Pat Donaghy (19). Not too far away in third was Anne Vekins (29) with 33 points. The winner of the gross prize was Hilary McCloy.

This third place finish was enough to take Anne Vekins into an early lead in the Player of the Year race. She currently has 20 points, Pauline Casey and Joan Hegarty are next best with 17, Maureen Keys has moved up to 16 points and Marian Devlin comes next with 15 points.

Rule 19 b) A member whose subscription is unpaid by 1st May shall not be eligible to compete in any club competition.

The Victor Fiorentini Cup was won by Hugh Craig (15) on Sunday past with a nett 62. Covering the front nine in one over par 35, aided by a two at the third hole, he achieved another birdie at the eleventh hole. Chasing him all the way was Charlie Kelly (25) who finished with a score of 63. He had a sub par score at the fifteenth hole and had the same total on each nine, a very consistent card. The top two were well clear of the rest of the field with the next best being the 66 of Eoin Rankin (15) who has rejoined the club recently. Willie Havlin won the gross prize with a two over par 71, and the nines went to Charlie Glenn (31 shots) and Tony Carlin (33 shots).

Saturday’s ladies and gents open stableford attracted a good entry. The best card belonged to Gerry McLaughlin (16) whose 37 points gave him a one point margin. Runner up was Andrew Ward (15) on 36 points and Bee Kelly (5) came home a close third on 35 points. The gross prize went to Brendan Price, and Paddy McClenaghan and Hugh Foy won the nines with 20 and 18 points respectively.

In the ladies section, the Vice Captain Maureen Keys (20) was the winner with 30 points.

This weekend will be busy with the AIB Moville sponsoring both days events. Saturday is a ladies and gents open singles stableford, and Sunday is a gents open stableford. Timesheets are in operation on both days and places can be reserved by contacting the club. Also incorporated in Sundays competition is the St Columbs College Past Pupils major competition of the year.

The club’s Irish Mixed Foursomes team travel to North West on Sunday for the qualifying event.

Last Thursday’s competition for the ladies was the Young Golfers Support Fund, and the winner was Veronica McLaughlin. The seventeen handicapper had a total of 32 points and a one point victory margin over Margaret Canavan (18). Also only one point further back was Maureen Keys (20) on 30 points. This weeks competition is the Mary Bonner Memorial Cup, a single stableford.

The following week is the Lady Captains Outing to Portsalon. To date 36 members have their name on the list to go.

Saturday and Sunday were two totally different golfing days at Greencastle, with scores much higher on Sunday than they were on the previous day.

John F McLaughlin (24) had the best score of the weekend with a 45 point finish and first place in the Smithwicks Cup. His card has six pars, he was a comfortable winner by two points. Runner up was popular Eamonn Curran (23) who is in a very good run of form currently. Four pars on the front nine, and two pars and a birdie in the back nine were examples of just how good a player he will be. Gerry Guckian (14) was third with a season best of 42 points. Gerry had a great run from the eleventh to the sixteenth holes which he played in level par. The gross went to Willie Havlin with 30 points, and Barney Boyle and Gerard Harvey won the nines.

A break of tie was necessary for Saturdays competition and young Tom Houston (14) had a better back nine than Noel Noone (18) and thus pipped him for the higher placed finish. Tom birdied the fourth hole, but bettered this on the par five thirteenth. He played his second shot in to twelve feet from the hole, and proceeded to sink the eagle putt. His plying partner Jack Keys (24) finished only one point behind him on 38 points, taking third place. And keeping up with them, the third player in their threeball, Sean McQuillan was the winner of the gross. The nines were won by Dermot McBride and Liam Edwards. There was a larger than normal entry for the ladies competition, and the top prize went to lady handicap secretary Anne Bonner (30) with 30 points. In second place was Pauline Casey (12) who was only one point behind her.

This weekend sees a ladies and gents open on Saturday, and the Victor Fiornetini singles stroke on Sunday. This will be the latest in the Player of the Year competitions. After last Sunday’s Smithwicks Cup, the top places are currently filled by Liam Edwards (47 points), Eddie McIntyre (38 points), Shaun Gillespie (34 points) and Eamonn Curran and Johnny Harvey (33 points).

Last Thursday’s ladies competition was the Duncreigh Cup, a stableford event and the latest of the Player of the Year counting events. Joan Hegarty (27) was the winner, after a break of tie, for her score of 67. The runner up was Marjorie Hegarty (32) and Anne Bonner (31) had the next best score of 68. Pauline Casey won the gross with 84. The C.S.S. was 70.

The nine ladies were Lady Captain Paula McGilloway, Catherine Cosgrove, Marian Devlin, Eileen Farren, Hilary McCloy, Anne Vekins, Margaret Canavan, Phil Cooke and Antoinette Hegarty. The top three scores came from Eileen Farren, Catherine Cosgrove and Anne Vekins, who totalled 95 points, winning by five shots from Buncrana and six over Ballybofey and Stranorlar who came second and third respectively. The Donegal Shield is essentially the county championship, with all of the clubs entering a team. This is the third occasion on which Greencastle ladies have picked up this prestigious title.         The Daphne Liggett foursomes was played on Thursday and there was very clear winners. Joan Hegarty (27) and Veronica Harkin (18) finished with 37 points and a four point margin. A break of tie was needed for second place and it fell in favour of Pauline Casey (12) and Helena Doherty (20). Next weeks competition is the Duncreigh Cup. This stroke play competition is the next in the Player of the Year race.               Members are asked to take note of the following club rule   Rule 19 b) A member whose subscription is unpaid by 1st May shall not be eligible to compete in any club competition.                     The dates for the completion of the first round matches in both the Inniskillen Cup and Biggar Cup have been extended by one week to Friday 3rd May due to the large number of matches still to be played and the projected available time.   Results to date in Inniskillen Cup Brian Reidy beat Tom Houston Philip Devlin beat Tony Carlin Brian Barr beat Alex Harkin Joe McCafferty beat John McCartney Eugene O’Sullivan beat Oliver Drummond Conor McCourt beat Paddy Ferguson Damien Harkin beat Paul Ferguson Jimmy Hegarty beat Jason McLaughlin         Biggar Cup Preliminary Round Gerry and Sean McQuillan beat Mark Tracey and Thomas Bradley Liam Skelly and Paul Bonner beat John Bradley and Niall Cosgrove Ciaran O’Neill and Brian Doherty beat Billy Harley and Anthony Thompson Paul Wallace and Brian Barr beat Willie McCrudden and Adrian Kelly Frank Faulkner and Paddy Havlin beat Mike Bonner and Pat McLaughlin Shaun Kelly and Brian H Kelly beat Neil Guckian and Hugh Casey   First Round Eugene O’Sullivan and Charlie Cavanagh beat James Harkin and Dermot Sharkey Dermot McBride and Shaun McLaughlin beat Paddy and Ryan Monagle Stuart Masson and William Spence beat Andrew Ward and John McCartney Declan McBay and Niall McCourt beat Brendan and Mike Price Trevor Holmes and Oliver Drummond beat Noel Noone and John Keyes Brian Reidy and Shaun McDaid beat James McCauley and Paul Gillen Joe Doherty and Seamus McElhinney beat Mervyn Morris and Tom Gallagher Jimmy Hegarty and Gerry Mullen beat Hubert Cavanagh and Paddy McClenaghan Noel Faulkner and Shaun Gillespie beat KevinLake and J P O’Doherty John Lynch and Joe McCafferty beat Liam Rigney and Tony McIvor John McDermott and Barney Boyle beat Bee Kelly and Charlie Kelly George Harley and Brian McDermott beat Thomas Doherty and Laurance McColgan Brendan Deehan and Leo McCauley and John Bell and Laurance McColgan Colm Doherty and Hugh Craig beat Michael L Doherty and Geoff Bourke Peter Lawrance and Peter Helferty beat Tom Houston and Philip Devlin Ryan Doherty and Cathal Kelly beat Davy Thompson and Kevin Thompson Maurice McGeady and Tony McGeady beat Ciaran McColgan and Michael Barron Paul McCole and Phonsie McCole beat Donal Bryce and Stephen Moore Johnny Harvey and Gerard Harvey beat Brian McRory and Hugh Doherty Ciaran Kelly and Hilary Donnelly beat Ciaran O’Neill and Brian Doherty     The Sandwich Company ran a fund raising day on Saturday past with the proceeds going to Multiple Sclerosis. As well as a singles event for ladies and gents, they also put up team prizes, an excellent array for a field of 118 to try to win. Ryan Doherty (24) was certainly inspired as he had a six point lead to win with 47 points. A birdie four at the fifth hole helped him garner 25 points on the front nine, and he completed the job, encouraged by his playing partners, on the back nine. Competitions secretary Barney Boyle (16) was the nearest to him. His 41 points indicates that he is beginning to hit form again just as the season is kicking in. Third place was filled by Damien Martin (23), whose extra play in the Wednesday Society is really benefiting him now. The ladies prizes required a break of tie for the top two prizes. By virtue of her better back nine, Joan Hegarty (27) beat Anne Bonner (31) into second place. Colette Campbell (22) was in third place with 32 points.     The team prize went to Brendan Price, Mike Price, Sean O’Kane and Anne Bonner with a staggering 101 points. The inspiring Ryan Doherty lead his team of Noel Faulkner, Barry Nicholas and Shaun Gillespie to second place on a score of 97 points. Next best card came from Paul Wallace, Des Henry, Brian Doherty and Ciaran O’Neill on 95 points.   Shaun Doherty (20) was the winner of Sunday’s singles stableford with 43 points, with a three point gap to second and six to third, such was the margin of his success. Six pars and one birdie (Lighthouse) were testimony to some great golf. The runner up was Paddy Ferguson (10) on 40 points. A two over par back nine included a birdie two at the short fifteenth hole. In third place was big Eddie McIntyre (9) with 37 points. A level par back nine in very difficult conditions started with a birdie at the tenth hole, and a further sub par score at the thirteenth hole. Jason McLaughlin won the gross prize and the nines by Neil Harkin (23 points) and Willie O’Donnell (20 points). This weekend is a ladies and gents open singles stableford on Saturday, and the Smithwicks Cup on Sunday. A ladies and gents open is organised for the Bank Holiday on Monday.     Moville Ladies GAA are holding their Annual Big Breakfast Fundraiser next Sunday in the GAA Clubhouse from 9am until 2pm Sit down to a Full Irish Breakfast, Toast, Tea or Coffee for €5.00 Takeaway available if your rushing for your Tee-Time. Everyone Welcome. On the subject of Moville GAA, they are currently accepting bookings for their team of four which is being held on Saturday 22nd June.
